Iran police raid office of prison rape whistle blower

Earlier today (Tuesday, Sept. 8), Iranian police occupied and shut down the personal office and Party headquarters of Mehdi Karroubi, the leader of Etemad Melli [National Trust] party. According to the Iranian Labor News Agency, ILNA, the raiders specifically confiscated all digital and audio-visual media from the office [intriguingly enough, the ILNA news item has since become inaccessible for 'technical' reasons].

This move comes at a very interesting time. Karroubi just recently announced that he has submitted at least three sets of audio and visual as well as medical documents as evidence for three cases of rape in prisons to the authorities. The 'authorities,' however, immediately and publicly denied such submission and receipt of any documents from Karroubi. Karroubi then went on defiantly to release a single piece of that evidence for the public tow days ago, and he threatened that if the judicial authorities deny his claims any further, he is prepared to release the rest.

For all means and purposes, the Islamic Republic appears to have started to act quite irrationally, which at the first sight may feel scary, but then when you think twice about it, it is actually a great sign. This is a great sign insofar as they are now acting like a trapped animal, more out of instinct than strategy, an indication that they are indeed superbly frightened and disoriented. What this means is that they are obviously conscious of the deep waters they are already in, and they are now struggling wildly to hang on any floating straw to avoid drowning. This can of course make them quite dangerous, but nonetheless, it is still a great sign, because it heralds the end of a horrible era for Iran -or at least its possibility.

Congratulations to all those who have an interest in the birth of democracy in Iran. I think it is not going to be far now.
